Dispersions (Ionomers): The Key to High-Performance Fuel Cells

While catalysts often receive the most attention in electrochemical systems, dispersions (ionomers) play an equally critical role in determining the performance, durability, and efficiency of fuel cells and electrolyzers.
Dispersions are multifunctional materials used in catalyst inks and membrane fabrication. They enhance ionic conductivity within catalyst layers, act as binding agents, and help create the porous microstructures necessary for efficient reactant transport and product removal.

Functional vs Non-Functional Dispersions
🔹 Functional Dispersions (Ionomers)
Designed to conduct ions and participate in electrochemical processes.
• Nafion Dispersions - Ideal for PEM fuel cells and PEM electrolyzers, conducting protons (H⁺) with excellent chemical stability.
• Fumion, Sustainion & Orion Polymer Dispersions - Designed for Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) systems, conducting hydroxide ions (OH⁻) and supporting alkaline fuel cell technologies.
🔹 Non-Functional Dispersions
• Teflon Dispersions - Used to provide hydrophobicity, improve water management, enhance porosity, and strengthen catalyst layer structure
